China Lapsang Souchong: Sophisticated, Smoky Intensity

Our China Lapsang Souchong has a dark and smoky flavor that tea drinkers with a sophisticated palate will love. Legend has it that this tea, hailing from the Fujian Province, was the result of accidentally drying out the leaves over pine fires. The tea was rejected and eventually ended up being traded with the Dutch, who sang its praises and requested more. Thus, this unforgettably peaty, pungent tea came into being. This exceptional tea is generally consumed with sugar, milk and/or lemon. This tea enjoys a well-known reputation as the scotch and cigar lover’s tea!

  • Fujian Province, China
  • A distinctive flavor and aroma, sometimes referred to as tarry. Heady aroma of a pine wood fire.

Beautiful store, and in a great location. The owner is very helpful & knowledgeable. Classes there are especially great 🙂 Lapsang Souchong is my new favorite – love the smokiness!

I too love the smokiness of this tea. If you like peat-smoked scotches and are considering a kind of tea that mimics it, this is likely the best you’ll find that’s readily available. Pine wood fire is probably a good description but it’s not so smoky that it overpowers your palate. As usual, I drank it straight (no cream or sweetener or other additives), and it goes very well with toasted bread & jam in the mornings.
