Our Russian Caravan, is a blend of Chinese teas to produce a blend with a rich, smoky aroma. It’s medium-bodied cup has a generous smokiness, but does not mask the flavor. Aptly named “Russian Caravan,” this blend is reminiscent of the long tea caravans that traversed Asia centuries ago, scenting their cargo by their nightly campfires.
- Anhui & Fujian Provinces, China, Taiwan
- A distinctive flavor and aroma, sometimes referred to as tarry. Heady aroma of a pine wood fire and a hint of carmamel sweetness.
- Medium-high

This tea is great for when I’m in the mood for something different. I was struck mainly by it’s aroma–I wanted to try Lapsang Souchong, but I was a bit hesitant. This tea smelled brighter to me than the pure Lapsang. It’s quite smoky still, but you can smell the bright pine and it’s a bit reminiscent of Christmas. You can taste a bit of that aroma come through in the tea, in that it tastes woody. I’m not totally sold on Lapsang as something I will drink a lot, but as something different once every two weeks, this is a fun addition. Just keep in mind if you’ve never had Lapsang Souchongs, that this is a blend that contains it, and the smoke is very powerful–kind of like a well maintained wood burning fireplace.

I wouldn’t call this a smoke bomb but it’s definitely smoky. So if you don’t like smoky teas, this isn’t for you. That out of the way, this is really good stuff. The richness of the classic black tea with a healthy level of smoke damn near got me drunk off it. Love at first taste.
While at the store, the associate helped me decide between this and Lapsang Souchong, which I’ve already had and liked. When nosing the containers of the dry leaves, this RC was smokier than even the LS; while the LS definitely was smoky there was also this damp soil note to it (and that’s a compliment) for complexity. Very interesting, I never noticed that before. I may have to keep 2 smoky teas in stock and not just one.
Note that while this is called Russian Caravan, this is actually a blend of Chinese and Taiwanese teas.
