Turmeric: The Miracle Root – One of our latest up and coming blends in the shop revolve around Turmeric. Why? Turmeric supports healthy joint mobility, and whenever combined with ginger and black pepper (piperine) it is a true elixir for joint health (arthritis).

What is turmeric? Turmeric is a tropical perennial plant that is found within the same family as ginger, native to India, and cultivated throughout the tropical hotbeds of the world. The plant grows to a height of around three feet, and it bears pairs of lance-shaped leaves on either side of the stem. At the base of the stem, there is a knobby rhizome somewhat resembling the ginger root.

Many of the healing benefits of turmeric have been attributed to curcumin, a group of antioxidant compounds found within the rhizome of the plant. Although curcumin is available as a standardized extract, the whole herb may be more beneficial. Only very small amounts of curcumin are absorbed into the bloodstream, and that is why black pepper plays such an important role within the body’s ability for a much higher absorption rate. Turmeric as a whole herb stays in the digestive tract longer than the curcumin itself, allowing for a much slower release of antioxidants along with other beneficial substances.

How does black pepper allow for a higher absorption rate? Curcumin has a poor bioavailability rate whenever absorbed orally due to its rapid metabolism in the liver and intestinal wall. But black pepper (piperine) has a much slower bioavailability rate allowing an enhancement of substances to remain in the cells for a longer duration of time. In recent years, studies have been done to show a higher absorption rate of curcumin whenever black pepper (piperine) has been introduced into the system. The absorption rate increased by a whopping 2000%.

Some of the positive attributes to consuming 3 grams of turmeric per day:

• Natural Anti-Inflammatory
• Helps Lesson Pain from Arthritis
• Increases Anti-oxidant Levels
• Helps prevent Type-2 Diabetes
• Boosts Brain Function
• Lowers Risk of Heart Disease
• Helps Prevent Alzheimer’s Disease

• Helps to Fight Aging

So, as you can see Turmeric is quite the powerhouse of a root!
