Gotu Kola? Gotu Kola/Brahmi also known as the “herb of longevity” is a perennial herb classified within the carrot family. It grows abundantly in shady, moist and marshy areas. Widely found in India, Madagascar, Polynesia, South Africa, Australia, China and Japan. The plant received its nickname in Sri Lanka. The inhabitants noticed elephants grazing on the leaves of the gotu plant and since these animals are known for having a very long life…hence the nickname.

This herb is not only known for its cognitive attributes, but gotu kola also has a wide range of other medicinal uses as well. Throughout the plants use by man, it has been known to treat skin inflammation, cataracts and other eye conditions, diabetes, purifying blood, as well as improving memory. It has also been known for its ability to prevent hair loss.

NOTE: High doses of gotu kola can act as a sedative. For this reason, some have cautioned against using the herb in combination with medication prescribed for anxiety and sleep disorders.

Gotu Kola is used for different ailments depending on the country and its culture. A list of a few:

Malaysia has used the plant to treat bronchitis and asthma, as well as stomach issues dysentery, kidney problems, as well as inflammation. The plant is sold as a tonic and a cold beverage as well.
Japan has used the plant in the past for its diuretic and detoxification properties.
South China has used it as a dietary supplement that may boost the immune system functions.

Gotu Kola has similar attributes to that of Gingko Biloba. It is known to boost cognitive health and aid in the treatment of Alzheimer’s and dementia. The leaf improves memory as well. It may also act as an antidepressant, as well as aid in the reduction of anxiety and stress, hence the prevention in hair loss. Holy Basil (Tulsi) is also a powerful herb that works synergistically with gotu to reduce stress and hair loss as well.
