Golden Milk: The Wonderfully Warm Turmeric Drink and Why It’s Good for You: Tumeric has a long history of being used as a household remedy in India. Recent years have seen turmeric-based health products explode in popularity across Europe and the United States, and it’s easy to see why. For centuries, turmeric has been a tool for digestive health and a symptom suppressor for common ailments like sore throats and runny noses. Turmeric is also known to have anti-inflammatory properties, meaning it can be beneficial to people with conditions such as multiple sclerosis, arthritis, and ulcerative colitis. The biggest boom for turmeric’s popularity in the west, however, is a delicious beverage that—because of its stark yellow color and buttery texture—has been dubbed ‘golden milk.’

Golden milk, known by some as ‘turmeric tea,’ is a blend of powdered spices that come together to make a delicious drink with a creamy, yet slightly spicy flavor. The mixture can be blended with warm milk or, for a vegan alternative, almond or coconut milk. The turmeric base is often flavored with additional ingredients such as cinnamon, coconut, vanilla, or ginger. The drink delivers all the health benefits of turmeric in a unique, great-tasting beverage.

The health benefits of turmeric tea come from curcumin, an active ingredient in turmeric that is purported to reduce inflammation (particularly in the brain) and block plaque accumulation in the body. Several studies have been done on the relationship between Alzheimer’s Disease and the consumption of turmeric, and some have concluded that turmeric treatment significantly reduces the risk of and alleviates the symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease. A simple serving of turmeric once a day can provide great health benefits long-term.

With its recent popularity in the west, golden milk is easier than ever to enjoy. The spices have a long shelf-life, and pre-made mixtures make serving up a cup as easy as making a cup of hot chocolate. At Tin Roof Teas, we’re partial to Jarrow Formulas Golden Milk, a hearty blend of whey and turmeric with the perfect amount of cinnamon and warming spices. Since powdered coconut milk is already in the mix, you only need hot water. Of course, it still blends well with hot milk, if you want your turmeric tea extra creamy!

There are several ways you can personalize your golden milk. We recommend sprinkling in a pinch of nutmeg or sweetening it with some vanilla-infused honey. It can even be blended into a smoothie with banana and pineapple! No matter what you like to mix in, we’re totally into this golden milk craze.
