Bitter Melon

Bitter melon is a tropical/subtropical herbaceous plant that is a member of the cucumber/squash family. The fruit is also thought to be the most bitter fruit in the world, hence the name. The fruit is widely grown and cultivated in Southeast Asia, China, Africa, and the Caribbean. Seeds leaves and vines have been used for centuries in traditional Chinese medicine.

First and foremost, bitter melon is a very powerful medicine for the treatment of diabetes through blood sugar regulation. Studies have shown that the un-ripened fruit juice when injected, provides a bovine like insulin. For all of the diabetic vegetarians out there, bitter melon would be a great alternative.

Since bitter melon is well, bitter, it aids in digestion and the treatment of ulcers. The plant has also been found to negate the reactions of HIV medication. Bitter melon contains more beta carotene then broccoli, as well as being packed with potassium, vitamins A and C as well as fiber.

Because of the demand for this herb, Tin Roof will be offering bitter melon later in the month. If it does well, we will keep it, if not, we gave it a shot.
