Fennel Seed

Tin Roof has added fennel seed to our ever-expanding herbal selection. Fennel has been highly prized throughout history. Old world civilizations and cultures like the Romans, Egyptians, Chinese and Indians have used this seed for either food, medicine, alcohol or various rituals.

Fennel grows up to 6 ft., has bright yellow umbrella shaped flowers, and is a member of the carrot family (Dill, coriander, and caraway are very similar to fennel in appearance). Fennel seed is widely cultivated around the world, and has the same aroma found in anise, and star anise. This aroma comes from the anethole compound. The fennel seed also has warming properties and effects on the liver, kidney, spleen and areas of the stomach. These properties are welcome whenever combating nausea, bloating and gas. Fennel has also been found to increase appetite. In Ayurveda, fennel’s warming properties promote energy and balance to all three of the dosha body types (vata, pitta, and kapha). Fennel is also considered nourishing to the brain, and eyes.

In modern times, fennel is still being used as a helpful digestive aid, an effective expectorant, foods and spices and have also been known to stimulate milk production in nursing mothers. A well-rounded herb to say the least.
