Science Shows a Hot Drink on a Hot Day Can Cool You Down

Tea on a Hot Day

Here’s a question for you. On a hot day, do you think it’s better to cool off with a cold beverage or a hot beverage?

If you’re like most people, you probably answered a cold beverage. But one study showed that drinking a hot beverage is actually the way to cool down the body. Surprised to hear?

Why Hot Drinks Help the Body Stay Cool

The University of Ottawa’s School of Human Kinetics performed a study which found that a hot drink can cool down the body, but only under specific circumstances. Here’s why.

Inside the tongue and mouth are nerves that are called receptors. These receptors receive signals from the outside world, and one particular receptor responds to heat specifically. When you drink something hot, the receptors send your brain a heat signal.

As the brain receives this message, it turns on the cooling mechanism your body has: sweating. The body ends up sweating more than it needs to, causing you to lower your body temperature.

It’s also worth noting that this trick only works under certain circumstances, such as on a hot, dry day. If you’re in a humid area, such as on the East Coast, a hot drink isn’t going to be effective. But if you live somewhere dry and hot like the desert, a warm beverage can cool you down.

Tea for All Seasons

Here at Tin Roof Teas, we’re not suggesting that you walk around with a hot cup of tea on a 95-degree day! Something cold and refreshing is definitely more appealing. But we do want tea-lovers to know that there is nothing wrong with snuggling up with a warm mug of tea on a summer’s evening.

Plus, many of our teas can be made iced or hot, giving you a range of options from a single loose leaf tea purchase. With flavors such as Blood Orange, Fresh Green Pear or Passionately Peach, tea is appealing year-round.

With our products, you can enjoy tea based on your mood, not the weather. Isn’t that the way it should be?
