What is Elecampane?

January 18, 2019

During the winter months at Tin Roof our best-selling herbs hand down, tend to be cold remedy blends. Each blend targets specific symptoms. If you have a sore throat then 5th Chakra is the blend for you. Upper respiratory and sinus issues, then try some Decongest Decoction. Overall immunity boosting, then Super Hero Formula will do.

Out of all of the ingredients that aid in combating illness, I have chosen the herb Elecampane. This herb can be found in our Decongest Decoction and aids in breathing. During constrictive breathing, the lining of the bronchial tubes become swollen making it harder to breathe. One of the active compounds found within Elecampane is Inulin, which is a phytochemical that coats and soothes the bronchial passages. Elecampane has been used in conditions such as bronchitis, emphysema, and tuberculosis.

What is Elecampane? The herb is a member of the same plant family as sunflowers, and ragweed. It’s native to eastern Europe but can be found around the world. Elecampane can grow into a tall plant between 6 and 8 feet, with large, pointed leaves, and dispersing yellow summer flowers.

In the 1800’s Elecampane could be found in lozenges, candy and cough drops. It has been found to have expectorant, sedative, and anti-microbial properties.
So next time you’re in the shop and in need of a little bit of cold relief, you now know what to ask for by name.
