A Tale of Two Tea Bases

Tea Bases

Whenever you first approach the counter at Tin Roof, most guests are overwhelmed by the sheer number of teas in our collection. One of our most popular categories would have to be our fruit tisane selection. What is a tisane? A tisane is an herbal, fruit, or rooibos tea. It does not contain any true camellia sinensis within the blend, therefore it is not a true tea. Back to our tale.
You have two types of bases for a fruit tea. The first is a hibiscus, rose hip base. If you have fallen in love with a Celestial Seasoning Zinger style of fruit tea, then that is what this base consists of. The Zinger aspect comes from the tart and sour note of the hibiscus, which gives the liquor a deep crimson red. Hibiscus can also be used for cholesterol and blood pressure maintenance.

The other type of base in the world of fruit teas are apples. Yes, apples have found their way into tea as well. Apples give you a less acidic tea, and is usually lighter and sweeter. Studies have found that high-fiber foods, such as apples, add certain protections that combat the degenerative effects of aging within the brain. This is a plus for those of us who are more inclined to have issues resulting from Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s as we age.

Just remember that fruit teas are also fantastic cold or iced. A real treat when chilled with mineral water or sparkling wine.
