Japanese Tea Ceremony

The Japanese tea ceremony, otherwise known as the “Way of Tea” is an activity for those involved to display their grace and etiquette while drinking a form of powdered green tea known as matcha. The ceremony may also use a green tea known as sancha. These ceremonies are held formally or informally. Chakai is an informal gathering centered around tea and involves a thin tea and a light snack to discuss events or meet as friends. The formal tea gathering is known as chaji and requires a full course meal along with both thick and thin tea. Chakai lasts as long as the participants intend to talk, while chaji may last up to four hours.

History of the Japanese Tea Ceremony

Tea appeared in Japan during the 9th century when a monk brought some back from China. At this time, dancha or “cake tea” was popular. In the 12th century another Japanese monk went to China and brought back seeds of the matcha tea to grow in Japan. Matcha was a high quality tea in Japan, and was used in Buddhist monasteries for religious purposes. The Tea Ceremony was developed by Zen student Murata Juko. He determined the four key aspects of the Tea Ceremony are harmony, respect, purity, and tranquility. The tea ceremony gained popularity because tea was considered a cure for all disorders.

Health Benefits

Murata Juko knew tea had special benefits and should be enjoyed and celebrated. Research has shown tea can help with weight loss, reduce the risk of heart attacks and stroke, protect your bones and teeth and help fight cancer. These benefits depend on the type of tea you drink. Loose leaf green tea is the least processed and contains the most antioxidants. Herbal teas soothe the digestive system and are caffeine free. Even traditional teas have less caffeine than coffee.

It is recommended you purchase your tea from someone who is passionate and knowledgeable about the different kinds of tea and also understands how it is processed and served. Some tea drinkers enjoy strong loose leaf black tea, while others enjoy honey in tea or organic fruit tea.
